Thank the Lord it is Holy Week….

Here we are, right in the middle of Holy Week, 2016.  I can’t help but wonder how bad these days would be if it wasn’t Holy Week?

Yesterday, radical Islamic terrorists, suicide bombed Brussels and killed at least 34 people and wounded 200.  Our President, spent the afternoon in Cuba at a baseball game with a communist dictator.  He did mention the terrorist attack in a speech for about 51 seconds.  I wish I could say it was  inspiring, but I cannot tell a lie.  Meanwhile, ISIS goes on committing genocide in the Middle East against mostly Christians and other Muslim groups.  This current administration cannot bring themselves to even call these terrorists exactly what they are.

Last night, the front runner for the GOP presidential nomination won yet another state.  However, even though the man clearly has won the majority of the states and delegates, the hierarchy of the Republican establishment seems to think that won’t matter come convention time…One of them was quoted as saying something to the effect that the party picks the nominee, not the voters…One Senator stated on Face the Nation, that he would rather lose the election ( the general one) than lose the heart and soul of the party.  I’m not making this up folks, he really said that!   Rather than supporting the electorate, and seeing his party change a bit,  Lindsey Graham would rather suffer through another Clinton administration.  Imagine for a moment what that could possibly bring about… A virtual re-writing of the Bill of Rights, abortion on demand, a left-packed Supreme Court, increased taxes, and then our right to protect ourselves taken away for good.   And once our right to defend ourselves vanishes, no one will be able to stop the Government from taking absolute control of our lives.  Religious freedom will no longer exist in the good ole’ USA. I know how bleak that must sound and everyone probably thinks that I am some kind of “Calamity Caller”.  But, from what I see and hear in the media, “We the People” need to be a bit more concerned and cautious.

Today, the Little Sisters of the Poor get to argue their case to the Supreme Court.  I find it shameful that they have to waste one second of their precious time.  Yet, religious freedom is under attack here in the United States.  Not just from radical Islamic terrorists, this comes from our own elected government officials.  Well, the Affordable Care Act is the law of the land they say…And, aren’t Christians supposed to Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s  and turn the other cheek?   I like what St. Augustine said, ” Lex iniusta non est lex”- An unjust law, is no law… Rendering to Caesar and turning the other cheek has never meant that we do not stand up, and if necessary, fight for our beliefs.

Well, there exists no doubt, we need God’s help and we need to pray diligently for our Country.  But, we need to also vote, and get the word out.  We need to find some way to be a light in this dark time.  We can be a formidable voice.    As Will Rogers said long ago, “Write to your congressman, even if he can’t read, write to him!”

I actually wrote a letter to Senator Diane Feinstein last year right after the Planned Parenthood videos came out.  I asked her if she would be willing to stop the tax payer funding of the organization.  She wrote me back and told me that the videos were heavily edited and that Planned Parenthood does so much good for women’s health care, blah, blah blah.  But, at least she wrote me back.  I don’t agree with her at all, but I am free to vote her out of office!  At least I think so, if she was an established Republican, my vote may not count…. I apologize for being cynical and writing such a negative piece today during the middle of Holy Week.

We Christians have hope though because we know that God is the one in control of everything.    No matter what happens in our world.  We need to trust Him and give thanks for all we have in this great Country.  None of us are perfect, and we are all sinners.  We must remember to pray for our enemies and to forgive those that persecute us.  I do not believe that means we can’t make a stand for things that are right and just.  We just need to do that with the right attitude.

The families and the victims of the Brussels bombing need our prayers and support.  We also need to pray for our leaders, as well as the leaders of other nations, that they will make wise decisions, and respect human life in all forms.  We need to pray for the martyred Christians and do what we can to stop the killing.   We need to pray for The Little Sisters of the Poor, that they will be able to continue to serve Christ without any ridiculous government restrictions.  Likewise, the SCOTUS needs prayer that they will make wise and just decisions.  We need to pray for our electorate!  The prevalent culture of death in our Country can be changed and even stopped with the right votes..

Well, I’m glad this is Holy Week.  Because of what Jesus did for all of us on the Cross, our sins are forgiven, even though we have done nothing to deserve it.  We can always thank Him in our prayers and worship.

St. Michael, The Archangel, Defend us in Battle

St. John Paul II, Pray for us

Ave Maria!

  1. Read your article Doctor Colos. For the very first time in my life….and I believe Dad was turning this way, even though I told myself I NEVER would, I do not feel a part of the GOP….I consider myself a Conservative. Mother Theresa said, “until we stop killing our own children, we will never have peace”. Hard to say I “enjoyed” your blog….but you are spot on.

    1. Thanks for the note. I want to try to always be positive about things because we do have hope. But, sometimes the news and current events makes staying positive nearly impossible….
