California, the Golden State, a land rich in scenic beauty from rugged coastlines to snow capped mountains. This state lays claim to the tallest living thing, as well as the largest living thing on earth. With in the state line lies the lowest point in the USA as well as the highest point in the lower 48. California exists as the only state to host both the summer and winter Olympic Games. California also leads the country in agricultural production… Wow, reading all of this sure paints a pretty picture, but that is only on the outside. The political forces in California seem to be doing their absolute best to turn this beautiful state into an ugly, sickening place where the prevalent culture of death can advance itself to new heights.
Governor Jerry Brown, a former Jesuit seminarian, has proposed the addition of $2.3 million to the state budget to pay for the drugs needed to assist a patient in suicide. Legislators are also calling for more tax revenue to help pay for toll free assisted suicide crisis lines. Not to be mistaken for crisis lines to prevent suicide- No, that would be too right of a thing to do. No, these crisis lines are for those poor folks that can’t seem to find help in actually taking their own life! I am ashamed of my profession, and I am disgusted with our elected officials. I am also ashamed that I am a native Californian… But, on the bright side, I am becoming a Nevada resident. You know, the state that keeps electing that champion of pro-life causes, Harry Reid, to the US Senate. I know I have mentioned this before, but our country desperately needs prayer and God’s Devine hand for help.
Governor Brown has been quiet about this additional tax. This proposal took place last week. I need to control my anger, but that task becomes more difficult each day. The part of California that I am from, would never have elected Jerry Brown . We have become used to not having representation in our government. But, this has gone too far. We should not have to pay one penny of our tax money to any arm of the culture of death. Their advocates will say, ” This money will help folks that are suffering so they can die with dignity.” As a family physician I will tell you the truth, without any pathetic euphemisms. It is far cheaper to pay for drugs to end the life of a patient, rather than to pay for medications, treatment, and nursing care. Let us not sugar coat this tragedy any more- Elected officials are willing to increase our taxes and use the money to end the life of the terminally ill, so they will no longer be a burden to society.
This can be stopped, but we must write to our elected officials and demand it. We also need to pray. We need to pray lovingly for these elected officials that come up with disastrous ideas like these. I believe we also need to pray that they get voted out of office. We need to pray diligently, a special prayer for the physicians that have agreed to go along with this nonsense. But, as Christians, we need to forgive and love those that we don’t necessarily like. Write to Jerry Brown. He must have learned something good when he was in the Jesuit seminary! Pray and ask for the intercession of St. Ignatius of Loyola. His prayer would be a good one for all of us….
teach me to be generous;
teach me to serve You as You deserve;
to give and not to count the cost,
to fight and not to heed the wounds,
to toil and not to seek for rest,
to labour and not to ask for reward
save that of knowing I am doing Your Will.
